The Greatest Band in The World!
Written by: Chris Castiglione
People used to say that it didn’t matter if you were the greatest band in the world because no one would ever care unless you got played on the radio.
Today there is infinite airtime available on the internet and the game has changed. Musicians are competing for the consumer’s attention and the best chance a band has of recruiting new fans is to let everyone have the album for free. If your band is worth something to those people, then maybe they’ll tune in again (and maybe next time they’ll buy something).
Eventually - at least to a handful of people - you may be the greatest band in the world!

why not ask musicians to simply start a non-profit organization? The best chance a musician has to make a living is by playing gigs, sessions, etc. Do musicians value fans? you bet. Do fans (based on this new business model) value musicians? I’d say maybe.
Based on this free music model, you’re asking a musicain to dump a load of money into recording a CD and then take on the enormous risk of giving it away to promote themselves. What’s your advertising budget? What’s your ROI on it? Bet it’s nothing compared to what your asking musicians to risk.
@Dan - But fans already don’t “value musicians”, and thats the problem. We have access to more music in one place (on the internet) then ever before.
We really need to look at the facts about record sales. Regardless if you don’t agree with, or don’t want “free music” as a new model, the market is sharply moving in that direction. To compare it with other industries that have already undergone this type of shift: letters have become email, atlases have become mapquest, and cds too will prevail as a free digital medium.
